Serge Lebrun as a baby, 1915 — born 19 April of that year in Port-au-Prince.
The family story behind the photograph: Serge’s father, Georges Marcel Lebrun, was away at war when his son was born. This portrait was taken and sent to him so he could see the child — and it was posed deliberately to make one thing plain, that the baby was a boy. Georges was French, so this was almost certainly the First World War, then in its second year.
